One of my very favorite quotes in all of movie history is Nora Ephron’s little celebration of autumn in You’ve Got Mail:
“Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.”
A bouquet of newly sharpened pencils. What an idea.
We are enjoying a visit from my dad at present, and last week he discovered my manual pencil sharpener hidden behind the curtain in the dining room. I told him, “after a few times purchasing electric or battery-powered sharpeners, I went back to what works.” We also only buy Ticonderoga pencils. Years of homeschooling and often being frustrated with suboptimal pencils led us to this tiny hill we will die on. Here we stand, we can do no other.
So tell me: what is your favorite back-to-school memory or association? Chime in below.
I’ll be back on Thursday with our regularly scheduled programming.
My favorite back to school memory was the fall of 2020, when I met my students in person for the first time after teaching them on Zoom 🥹
It was so sweet to give them hugs and hear the classroom full of laughter and love (& so much chaos, if we’re being honest) after such a long time being apart
My favorite association was getting crisp new supplies: notebooks, paper, folders, art supplies. It always felt like a crisp fresh start that matched the crispness of fall (or at least the approaching fall, since August is still very much summer in Charlotte).
