Hello! We’re back!
It’s back-to-school month here in North Carolina, though I know many of you don’t go back until next month. The first day of school always reminds me of the pictures in front of the neighbors’ garage, my sister and I in our newly-purchased outfits from JC Penney, suffering for fashion in corduroy and tights when it was still a bit too hot for all that.
Last month when I was in Massachusetts visiting family, I stunned my children by informing them that I used to walk to and from kindergarten at the age of five. It was not a long walk; the entire walk was lined with houses occupied by families we knew; I was never in danger — but I did remember where that kind of scary dog lived, even forty years later.
What are your memories of going back to school?
I remember waiting for the bus as a kindergartner with my two older brothers (much to their chagrin, I’m sure). I was so excited to finally go to the “big kids school”. Because of the age differences, that was the only year the three of us were at the same school.
